Amazing book for beginners!
This book was recommended to me by a colleague after I showed some interest in stock investing. Prior to reading this book, I knew practically nothing about businesses or the market at all. I had no clue what an index was, or what equity, assets or liabilities are. On my own time I would follow the stock price of some companies that were always under the highlight (apple, google, facebook, tesla) and imagine what would happen if I were to speculate and try to beat the...more

This is a very good book if you already knew the financials and have a fair understanding of investing. This book along with 'little book that builds wealth', 'competition demystified' are very good, since they take real world (USA) examples and explian in detail. There is a lot of industry analysis which is very useful while analyzing real world companies.
This book explains fundamental analysis very comprehensively and should be in every investors' toolkit. The book is geared more towards those who are starting out. But more advanced readers will find the chapters on industry analysis highly insightful. For those who are interested, I recommend supplementing this reading with McKinsey's Valuation for a deeper understanding of ROIC.
If I am going to write a book on any topic this is how I will write and illustrate whatever information I want to convey. Perhaps the best book on stock investing. The only caution is that it will be a slow read for the readers who don't have accounting knowledge but that doesn't mean they should not read it.
Also the industry analysis is based on the USA and may not be completely applicable to other geographies but one can learn from the base and develop the knowledge thereafter.
If you ever wanted to learn how to read balance sheets, income statements, and grasp the true meaning of cash flow. Don't buy another book, this is the one you're looking for.
Gives a great insight to value investing, buying companies on the cheap side after you've done all your homework.

Very well written giving an excellent insight on the how to invest effectively. If you haven't been able to read the classic works of Security Analysis and Intelligent Investor you would find this a welcome change.

Probably the best book on investing I have read.

I learned all about each major industry and how to evaluate a company. Excellent education for anyone who wants to understand how companies can be effectively operated.

When I think of Morningstar I picture something similar to Moody’s or Standard & Poor’s, a correct, slow and slightly bureaucratic organization. This book gives a totally different insight. It takes a clear stance for the Warren Buffett “buy wonderful businesses at reasonable prices”-type of value investing (as opposed to the “Graham low multiple, cigar butt”-type). It’s clear that the author Pat Dorsey, Director of Stock Analysis for Morningstar, but also Joe Mansueto the founder of the sam...more

Exceptional in explaining the whole process from A to Z; Lucid writing style and clear examples. Dedicated chapters on how to value each sector is very useful. Reccomed this book to any serious beginner.
By far the best and if not most comprehensive book on investing. What to measure, gauge, check, look out for, from business fundamentals, financial statements, management, valuation, and different industry checklist and barometer, this book has it all!

A very good read to understand how to invest in stock markets. Such detailed analysis are described before buying a stock but no reliable analysis on when to sell a stock.
This book is not only about the fundamental analysis of stock investment, but it is also great book of knowledge for a business management in the perspective of company financial..

I liked it. It's kinda for beginner but there are nice tips on particular industries even for people that are more navigated.

I am value investor from India. I read this book 3 years ago and I can say unequivocally that I have benefited from this book. It gave me solid footing in value investing, nature and attractiveness of various industries, advantage of competitive advantage, how to value companies using DCF, calculation of FCF and many case studies. Pat Dorsey has run us through sample DCF valuation using FCF. Please note that this is quick valuation which does not go into details of WACC, Beta, interest rates etc...more

PROS: Teaches beginners how to invest and what to look for. The last chapters talk about what to look for for different types of companies which is one thing I'll use a reference as long as I'm investing.
CONS: Can't think of any - I'm just a newbie. I need to start investing and after listening to some of Warren Buffets lectures on how he invests I thought along with a Roth IRA, stock investing would be a good choice as well. The author of this is the CEO of Morningstar and if you don't know what...more
Excellent read for a noobie in stock investing. Introduces us to the various industries and insights on them.

If you're interested in fundamental analysis, this book should definitely be on your short list. It breaks down what an annual report tells you, what numbers are (and aren't) important, and how to identify an economic moat. The last section takes you through the ins and outs of several different industries. If you could only read two books on investing, this one and Ponzio's 'F Wall Street' should be the two you choose.
This excellent book is a comprehensive introduction to personal investing. It covers all relevant topics for a new investor, and it does so in a straightforward and concise manner. While there is certainly other books which may provide more detail on various topics, this book effectively introduces the concepts and covers the critical aspects. Additionally, the chapters stand alone so there is no need to read it cover-to-cover.
I plan on referencing back to it many times.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants an introduction to stock investing. This book is not for the faint of heart, however. It gives a pretty detailed explanation of the method you needs to use to analyze stocks and mae profitable results.

This is an okay book for those who are starting our their career in investing. However, it is quite dated (published 2003) and explains everything too broadly to be able to provide any real and valuable insights.

“The basic investment process is simple: Analyze the company and value the stock. If you avoid the mistake of confusing a great company with a great investment—and the two can be very different—you’ll already be ahead of many of your investing peers. (Think of Cisco at 100 times earnings in 2000. It was a great company, but it was a terrible stock.)”
